The film alternates the trial timeline with Kya's biography. The flashbacks begin in 1953 with Kya as a six-year-old: her mother leaves the family in a long white dress carrying a suitcase, her older siblings vanish one by one over the next year, her abusive father retreats into the marsh's shack, and eventually he too disappears, leaving Kya alone in a one-room cabin with a mussel-shell economy that lets her trade for grits and gasoline at Jumpin's marina. The film does the work of showing how she survives without sentimentalising it: Jumpin' (Sterling Macer Jr.) and his wife Mabel (Michael Hyatt) become her quiet protectors; the town's school system fails her in a single humiliating afternoon; the marsh becomes both refuge and curriculum, and Kya teaches herself biology by drawing what she finds. The two-timeline structure pays off because the audience is given the trial's stakes and Kya's interior life at the same rhythm.
Adolescence introduces the two men who will define both timelines. Tate Walker (Taylor John Smith) is the older boy who teaches Kya to read, leaves feathers as gifts on a stump, and proposes to publish the field guide she has been keeping. He leaves for college and does not come back the summer he promised. Chase Andrews (Harris Dickinson) is the quarterback whose interest in Kya runs hot the moment Tate has disappeared and curdles, episode by episode, into the kind of control the town has trained him to think of as flattery. The middle stretch of the film is a romance in two acts and a slow-motion warning sign — Newman lets Dickinson's charm do the early work and lets the threat reveal itself, on the page and in the body language, before the script states it.
The third act binds the two timelines together. Tate returns, older, an aspiring zoologist, willing to act on the moral debt the script has been building. Chase's behaviour escalates. Tom Milton (David Strathairn), Kya's elderly defence attorney, presents a courtroom argument that asks the town to confront what it has been calling justice. The film resolves on the verdict, the question of what happened on the fire tower the night Chase died, and a coda that runs all the way to the close of Kya's life. Newman's adaptation softens some of the novel's edges but preserves the central beat the book is famous for — the closing reveal that recasts the trial and Kya's biography as one continuous story.
