Movies like Life of Pi

Why it's similar — Ronald Neame's capsized-liner thriller pairs with Life of Pi on a single image — a single freighter overturning at sea, a small group of survivors forced to navigate the inverted world below. Pi's Tsimtsum sinking sequence is essentially Neame's set-piece run in miniature, and the question of who survives the water becomes the film's whole second act.

Why it's similar — Chris Williams's Netflix animation puts a child on a small boat with a giant ocean creature and asks whether the monster is the thing to be hunted or the thing to be befriended. The throughline with Pi — kid plus predator plus open ocean, with the political adults shouting from shore — is direct, and the visual register of luminous water and improvised cohabitation rhymes scene for scene.

Why it's similar — Spike Jonze's adaptation of Maurice Sendak runs the same interpretive trick Lee runs in the third act: a young protagonist tells a story populated by large nonhuman creatures, and the film leaves the audience to decide which register the events actually happened in. Max's island and Pi's lifeboat are two versions of the same psychological space.

Why it's similar — Ridley Scott's adolescent sailing-school drama climaxes in a sudden Caribbean squall that capsizes the brigantine Albatross and forces the surviving teens to give an inquest-room account of what they did and did not see. The structural rhyme with Life of Pi's two-version ending — survivors testifying to incredulous adults about something the ocean did — is closer than the genre packaging suggests.

Why it's similar — Michael Morpurgo's source novel and the 2024 animated adaptation share Pi's spine almost beat for beat: a boy washed overboard from a family yacht, marooned on an island with one large nonhuman companion, learning to share food and territory across the language barrier. Where Pi gives you a tiger, Kensuke's Kingdom gives you a shipwrecked Japanese veteran and an orangutan — same survival grammar, gentler register.
