Norma Rae
1979Why it's similar — Martin Ritt's 1979 Sally Field vehicle works the same Southern-women-finding-their-political-voice register Fried Green Tomatoes is built on, and the rhyme is both films' interest in working-class women whose political awakening is dramatised inside a small Southern town's everyday life. Both films treat the act of telling a story — Ninny's narration in one, Norma's union speech in the other — as the moment a woman becomes a different kind of person on screen.
