Why it's similar — David Lynch's 1990 Palme d'Or winner is the closest formal precedent for Bones and All — two young lovers on the American road, a maternal trauma chasing them through every state line, and a violent fairy-tale logic that treats the highway as the only territory where the couple can be themselves. Both films treat the road movie as a romance form first and a crime form second, and both refuse to apologise for either register.

Why it's similar — Any new adaptation of Brontë's novel is operating in Bones and All's emotional register: two outcast lovers whose attachment is more dangerous to the world around them than to each other, and a landscape that participates in the love story as a third character. The rhyme is the gothic-romance conviction that the love between two damaged people is, in the world's terms, indistinguishable from a curse — and is presented by the film as a kind of grace anyway.

Why it's similar — Guillermo Arriaga's 2008 directorial debut is structured around the same maternal trauma that drives Bones and All — a daughter trying to understand a mother whose absence has been the shape of her whole life — and uses the same wide American-landscape grammar (here, New Mexico and Oregon) to externalise the inheritance. Both films are slow burns about what a parent passes down without ever speaking the inheritance out loud.

Why it's similar — This 2025 adaptation of Jay Crownover's tattooed-bad-boy romance operates in the same young-love-in-an-unforgiving-world register Guadagnino is working in here, with the same emphasis on physical scarring as the visible record of an interior history. Both films treat first love as something that requires being known at the most uncomfortable register before it becomes love at all.

Why it's similar — Dan Curtis's 1974 Jack Palance Dracula, made for television but theatrically released abroad, articulates the same horror-romance hybrid Bones and All is built on — the love between a sympathetic monster and a human is staged with as much weight as the predation is, and the monster's hunger is presented as the source of his tragedy rather than as the genre's payoff. The rhyme is the seriousness with which both films take love between people whose nature is at odds with the world.
